World Champions / South American qualifier - Group B

The Murciélagos ("Bats") as the Argentinian side are known, were formed in 1991, and developed rapidly to become a Paralympic team in 2001.

The Murciélagos have earned a place amongst other notable citizens of the City of Buenos Aires, having been recognised with honours by the National Congress and been invited to meet three different presidents of Argentina.

Among their most important titles to date include runners-up in the 1998 and 2000 World Championships, World Champions in 2002 and 2006, silver medallists at the Athens Paralympics in 2004 and bronze medallists at the 2008 games in Beijing.

As defending champions, the side will be expecting nothing less than another series of trophy-winning performances, and with arch-rivals Brazil, who beat them to the South American title in December, in the same group, the stage is set for a mighty struggle to top the group.

A great day for the beautiful game

There is much debate about who coined the phrase the ‘beautiful game’ but everyone who has ever used it – from Pele to Platini – meant pretty much the same thing. Football is a game played by 300 million people across the globe, and enjoyed by millions more. It’s beautiful because it unites people. The teams, communities, and countries too.
